In the name of the City of Stuttgart, capital of Baden-Wuerttemberg, I would like to welcome the participants of the ESOP-conference as our guests.

It gives me great pleasure that your organization has chosen Stuttgart as the place for its conference. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you a successful scientific meeting. I also hope that you will find some time to see and enjoy some of the sights in Stuttgart.

You are engaged in the scientific observation of occultations. A very special event of this kind will take place when in the midday-hours of August 11th 1999, the umbra of the moon will fall right on Stuttgart.

I hope and wish that the sky above our city will present itself without any clouds so this cosmic event can be seen clearly so you will keep Stuttgart in the best of your memories.
