Weather Forecast for the Solar Eclipse on August 11, 1999

Die totale Sonnenfinsternis wird eines der größten Naturschauspiele dieses Jahrhunderts. Wie wird das Wetter sein? - Klaus Sturm, Meteorologe in der Regionalen Vorhersagezentrale in Stuttgart gibt eine Einführung in die Vorhersagesysteme des Deutschen Wetterdienstes und gibt eine Prognose für den 11. August 1999.

The solar eclipse at August 11th 1999 is a popular highlight at the end of this century. May be it will be the most impressive nature spectacle in Germany in this century at all. Scientists are well prepared, media jumps out of it´s starting hole and also general public catches more and more interest. At these days weather prediction is not an easy job to do. When moon covers sun, clouds may cover the sky. Worse weather conditions may lead to big disappointment.

Among other things DWD (Deutscher Wetterdienst) the german weather service is responsible for the survey and prediction of daily weather. Well beware of the importance of weather during the solar eclipse, bureaucratic weathermen focus on weatherconditions of August 11th. Forecasts can be reached by phone, fax and internet.

The presentation gives an insight into the process of weather prediction established at DWD, the predictability of weather and the quality and reliability of weatherforecasts. At least Klaus Sturm, senior forecaster and scientific supervisor of the DWD prediction center in Stuttgart gives an actual forecast for August 11th 1999.
